Are you frustrated by relying on glasses or contacts for a refractive error or focusing issue, but have been told you are not a good candidate for LASIK vision correction? It may seem as though you are out of options, but that is far from the case. You might be a good candidate for an alternative procedure called refractive lens exchange. Read on as the team at Vista Eye Specialists reveals what you need to know about refractive lens exchange.

What Happens during the Procedure?

Refractive lens exchange removes your natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens with a specific prescription. The procedure is virtually identical to cataract surgery, except that the natural lens being replaced is clear instead of cloudy or discolored.

There are many types of artificial lenses that can be used: some provide clear vision at a single distance and others at multiple distances. Certain lenses even correct for astigmatism. Depending on which lens you choose, you may only need glasses for certain situations, or you may not need them at all.

During the procedure, a small incision is made in the eye to access the natural lens. Special energy is directed at the lens to break it into small pieces, and the pieces are removed from the eye. Then, an artificial lens implant is secured in the space where the lens used to be.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and normally takes about 15 minutes. The second eye is treated approximately one week after the first. The recovery after surgery is usually quick and relatively pain-free.

What Are the Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange?

In addition to being a great option for individuals who do not qualify for LASIK, refractive lens exchange has other benefits. Replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial implant prevents any further age-related changes, including presbyopia, which is the thickening of the lens that causes the loss of near vision, and cataracts, which is a yellowing or discoloration of the lens that impedes clear vision. Refractive lens exchange reduces or eliminates the need for “readers,” bifocals and trifocals. The results are permanent and last a lifetime.
