What Happens during the Procedure?
Refractive lens exchange removes your natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens with a specific prescription. The procedure is virtually identical to cataract surgery, except that the natural lens being replaced is clear instead of cloudy or discolored.
There are many types of artificial lenses that can be used: some provide clear vision at a single distance and others at multiple distances. Certain lenses even correct for astigmatism. Depending on which lens you choose, you may only need glasses for certain situations, or you may not need them at all.
During the procedure, a small incision is made in the eye to access the natural lens. Special energy is directed at the lens to break it into small pieces, and the pieces are removed from the eye. Then, an artificial lens implant is secured in the space where the lens used to be.
