What Is the Vivity® IOL and How Is It Different from Other Lenses?

Cataract surgery has advanced far beyond simply removing a cloudy lens. Today‘s advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) simultaneously replace the natural lens and provide sharpclear vision correction. Among the latest options is the Vivity® lens, which offers a new way to reduce dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. At Vista Eye Specialists, Dr. Binoy R. Jani helps patients understand how this innovative lens works and how it compares to other choices.

Differences Between Vivity and Other IOLs

Standard monofocal lenses correct vision at one distance, typically far vision. This makes activities like driving or watching TV much clearer.

The limitation is that they don’t address age-related near vision loss. After about age 40, most people develop presbyopia, which makes it harder to see things up close. With a standard monofocal lens, you’ll likely still need reading glasses for everyday tasks such as checking your phone, using a computer, or reading a menu.

Multifocal lenses were developed to correct vision at more than one distance. They can reduce the need for glasses, but some patients notice visual side effects, including glare or halos around lights.

The Vivity lens works differently. Instead of splitting light into zones, as multifocal lenses do, it uses a special technology called X-WAVE that stretches and shifts light entering the eye. This creates a smooth, continuous range of vision from far to intermediate, with useful near vision as well. One of the biggest benefits is that glare and halos are greatly reduced compared to many multifocal lenses, which can be especially helpful for people who drive at night or are sensitive to bright lights.

Vivity is the first lens of its kind. It offers:

  • Monofocal-quality distance vision
  • Excellent medium-distance (intermediate) vision
  • Functional near vision

This flexibility means you get more freedom from glasses but still avoid the light-related side effects sometimes associated with some other premium lenses.

Not every patient is a candidate for the same type of lens. Factors like eye health, lifestyle, and visual goals all play a role in determining the best option.
