One of the topics that your LASIK surgeon will discuss with you during your pre-operative consultation is post-operative care. Although the LASIK recovery is generally short and usually free of complications, it is still a medical procedure and there are a few crucial “do’s” and “don’ts” to follow after surgery.
Take a moment to learn what not to do after LASIK surgery, as outlined by the team at Vista Eye Specialists.
Do not rub your eyes for a few weeks after LASIK.
Refrain from rubbing or pressing on your eyes to ensure the surface of your eye heals properly. If you get an eyelash or a particle of dust in your eye, instead of rubbing it try to flush your eye with artificial tears.
You will receive an eye shield or pair of goggles to wear at bedtime during the first few days — this prevents you from accidentally rubbing or pressing on your eyes while you sleep.
Do not let the shower stream get in your eyes.
To keep your eyes safe after LASIK, avoid letting the shower stream hit your face directly. You may prefer to take baths instead.
Do not wear eye makeup for approximately one week after LASIK.
Flakes of eye makeup could get in your healing eye and irritate it.
Do not go swimming or in a hot tub.
Stay away from sources of possibly contaminated water after your procedure. Avoid swimming in pools, lakes or oceans and going in hot tubs or whirlpools for approximately one week.
Do not play contact or collision sports.
It is crucial to avoid any contact or collision sports or vigorous exercise during the initial post-operative period, as you do not want to risk injuring the healing flap. Your LASIK surgeon can advise when it is safe to resume these types of activities.
Do not skip any of your scheduled follow-up appointments.
You will have several follow-up visits scheduled with your LASIK surgeon to monitor your healing process and ensure you do not experience any complications. Do not skip any of these visits, as they are a valuable opportunity to check in with your doctor and discuss any questions you may have.
