Introducing the PanOptix Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL): 3 Things to Know

Posted on Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 by Dr. Binoy Jani

In August 2019, the FDA approved a new family of intraocular lenses (IOLs) for patients undergoing cataract surgery. The AcrySof IQ PanOptix Trifocal Intraocular Lens is the first and only lens of its kind, and shows incredible promise and potential to change the lives of cataract patients.

Read on as Vista Eye Specialists reveals three things to know about the new PanOptix lens.

1. Vision at All Distances After Cataract Surgery

With other intraocular lenses, patients are able to see distant objects clearly, but require glasses to see near objects — or vice versa. The PanOptix IOL is unique in that it provides clear vision at faraway, intermediate and reading distances. It enhances not only a person’s visual range, but also the sharpness and vividness of colors. Designed with ENLIGHTEN Optical Technology, the PanOptix lens is engineered to optimize intermediate vision without compromising near or distance vision.

This high-quality vision enables patients to lead full, independent and active lives without constant dependence on glasses. The lens allows patients the vision they need for work and leisure activities. They can read, work on a computer, drive and engage in hobbies without worrying that declining vision will get in the way. For some patients, the vision they are able to achieve with the PanOptix lenses is the best it’s ever been (even compared to the vision they had before cataracts).

2. Available in a Toric Version

The PanOptix lens comes in a toric version to correct astigmatism, a condition in which an irregularly shaped cornea causes distorted, blurry vision. The toric PanOptix lens clears the distortion caused by astigmatism and reduces the need for glasses and/or contact lenses.

3. Outstanding Patient Satisfaction Rates

In a clinical study of 12 investigational sites, patients were overwhelmingly in favor of the new lens. More than 99 percent of patients receiving the PanOptix IOL said they would choose the lens again, and 98 percent would recommend the lens to friends and family.
