The Bottom Line on Discount LASIK

Posted on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 by Dr. Binoy Jani

Shopping around can certainly be worth the effort for items such as electronics, vacations,  clothing, vehicles and other consumer goods.

However,  when it comes to discounts or bargains on the cost of LASIK, buyer beware. You are better off spending more money to ensure you receive quality medical care and achieve great results.  After all we are talking about your sight and how you see!

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It Is

Nowadays, some LASIK centers advertise laser vision correction for as little as $299 per eye. If you see or hear of a practice offering LASIK for rock-bottom pricing, one of three things may be true:

  1. The practice is using outdated technology or cutting corners somewhere. Most trustworthy LASIK surgeons have retired outdated technology in favor of all-laser technology, which offers enhanced safety, precision and faster recovery times. Modern LASIK technology may be more expensive but it is the new standard of care and your sight is worth it
  2. The surgeon does not have a lot of experience performing LASIK.
  3. You are at risk of a classic “bait and switch.” The lasik center wants to lure you in for a consultation under false premises, and then quote you the actual price of LASIK surgery with hidden or a la carte fees (e.g., pre-operative exams, post-operative follow-up, surgery center fees).   The advertised price would be applicable to only a very small percentage of the population based on their vision prescription and in reality rarely does anyone get this price.

The bottom line is that if a price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You do not want to cut corners when it comes to the experience of your provider or the technology they use, as these factors greatly affect your safety, well-being and visual outcomes. You owe it to yourself to find a leading LASIK surgeon to perform your treatment, and to make sure they use top-of-the-line, all-laser technology. Compromising on the experience of your LASIK surgeon or the technology used could require you to spend more money (and time) correcting or improving upon the results of your surgery.

As you explore your options and make decisions about your care, remind yourself that LASIK is one of the most important investments you will ever make in your eyes and your vision!
