This is an easy one, right? Your eyesight is important to you — of course you’re going to get it checked regularly! However, a lot of people put off eye appointments, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe they’re older people, not quite ready to admit to something being wrong, or they’re younger people, a little afraid of the process.
There’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to an eye check-up! Although it can be a little alarming, getting your pupils dilated doesn’t hurt. It makes it a lot easier for the doctor to look at your eyes to see if something’s wrong. Yes, your eyesight is temporarily impaired, but wouldn’t you rather suffer a few minutes of dilation rather than a few years of slowly going blind because you wouldn’t see a doctor? Some doctors will give you special glasses for the time during dilation; their overall goal is that you are calm and comfortable.
It can be tempting to lie during a vision check — when lenses are swapped in and out in front of your eyes and you’re asked better or worse?, sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference! Never lie during a vision check, though. Your doctor wants you to have the best eyesight possible, and if you don’t tell the truth about what you’re seeing, then they can even end up making your eyes weaker by accident. Glasses are a trendy fashion accessory, sure, but you can also find any number of them with clear lenses rather than lying to your doctor and ending up with a prescription that isn’t doing you any good.
More importantly, check ups reveal issues with your eyes that may not be obvious yet, or your doctor can alert you to new technologies available. Even if your glasses are oh-so-trendy, your doctor could let you know about the LASIK opportunities they have available. Or maybe you want to try something a little different, like colored contact lenses. Either way, you need to be able to communicate with your doctor, and you can only do that if you go to your appointments and exams.
