The Day After LASIK: What to Expect

LASIK in Fredericksburg & Culpeper, VA

In the hours after LASIK surgery, you will most likely want to rest and keep your eyes closed since your vision will be blurry. By the same evening, the cloudy vision will begin to improve. Your vision will be improved and you can start to resume normal activities the next day. Here is what the experts at Vista Eye Specialists say you can expect:

Your Eyesight Is Better Than Ever

The hazy vision you experience immediately following LASIK usually wears off within a day. Then, for the majority of patients, it takes just one to two days for LASIK’s vision correction to take effect, so by the next day you may be amazed at how much more of the world you can see.

In the small chance that your eyesight is not markedly improved, don’t worry. Some patients do not experience the full effects for a few months, but that does not mean the results will be any less significant or lasting.

Take a Bath

You doctor will instruct you not to take a shower on the same day after you have had LASIK because your eyes cannot handle the rush of water — or soap for that matter. At the 24-hour point, you can give more thought to taking a shower so long as you take extra effort to prevent the water and soap from entering your eyes for that first week.

Better yet, if a tub is available to you, it is probably easier to draw yourself a bath where you can ensure that your head remains safely above the water.

Read and Watch TV in Moderation

Immediately following LASIK, you are discouraged from taking up the usual rest and relaxation activities of reading and watching TV for longer periods of time because they are too strenuous on your healing eyes. After the first day, you can start reintroducing these activities provided that you limit the amount of time you spend on them, and rest your eyes when they start to feel tired.

Bring Eye Drops Everywhere

It will take a while for your eyes to lubricate normally, so carry eye drops with you wherever you go to help with dry eye. That is especially true if you will be staring at a computer screen for a prolonged period, since that will cause your eyes to dry out even faster.
