What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser eye surgery that can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Binoy R. Jani, M. D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist and laser eye surgeon who understands the intricacies of LASIK and similar procedures. Here, he explains how to tell if LASIK is right for you.

What is LASIK Surgery Like?

LASIK is a relatively quick and painless laser procedure that can improve your vision and reduce your need for contacts and glasses. During the procedure, the surgeon uses a laser to create a flap in the cornea, or the clear, front part of the eye. The flap is then folded back (like a book) so the surgeon can reshape the underlying tissue to improve the way the cornea bends (refracts) light. The way the cornea is reshaped will depend on the specific vision issue. The flap is then returned to its original position (like closing a book).

What is LASIK’s Recovery Time?

The procedure is performed in a laser suite and takes 10 to 20 minutes. Recovery after LASIK is quite fast as well. Patients can normally return to work within one to two days.

Who is a Candidate for LASIK?

Unfortunately, not everybody is a candidate for LASIK. Dr. Jani will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine if you are an ideal LASIK candidate. He will also consider other factors in addition to your eye exam, including your lifestyle and your career.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle may influence whether you are an ideal LASIK candidate. The following factors will be considered:

  • Overall health. The ideal LASIK candidate maintains good overall health and has no uncontrolled systemic diseases that could interfere with surgery or recovery. They also have good mental health and realistic expectations regarding the surgery.
  • Many people choose to undergo LASIK because of their hobbies. People who enjoy recreational activities and the outdoors may not want to deal with the hassle of contacts and glasses. People who engage in up-close hobbies such as arts and crafts may seek LASIK to improve their vision.
  • Health conditions. Certain medications and health conditions can impact your candidacy for LASIK. Notably, if you have uncontrolled diabetes, you may not be a candidate. However, if your diabetes is well-managed then you may still be a candidate.
  • Hormones fluctuate during and after pregnancy, and this can cause prescriptions to change. The ideal LASIK candidate is not pregnant or nursing.

Career

There are many reasons why a person may pursue LASIK, including their career. Many of the best candidates for LASIK have careers that benefit from clear vision and reduced dependence on contacts and glasses. These careers can include the following:

  • First responders
  • Pilots and air traffic controllers
  • Military personnel
  • Athletes
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Teachers
  • Fashion designers
  • Forestry professionals
